London Borough of Lewisham-Coordinator – (UK)

London Borough of Lewisham is a London borough in south London, UK and forms part of Inner London. The Young Mayor is a programme within the council that provides a focus and a channel for young people’s views to be heard by decision makers.

The Young Mayor is supported by young advisers and a Young Citizens’ Panel and they have access to the full range of young people’s forums, networks and school councils. It was started in 2004 by Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham – and it is influential in encouraging other councils to provide this opportunity for young people.

The Young Mayor Project has experience of working with partners in sharing good practice in Europe. Through the Youth in Action and Erasmus + programme, The Young Mayor Programme has carried out several transnational projects with young people around issues of democratic engagement and more recently on young peoples response to austerity. More recently the Young Mayor team have taken part in Erasmus + projects with partners focusing on some of the consequences of austerity in particular youth unemployment and enterprise and how young people’s skills and experience in engaging with civic society can support their transition into work, and/or to create their own opportunities through enterprise and entrepreneurship. Lewisham Young Mayor have partners in Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, France, Spain, Italy and Northern Ireland and have officers and politicians visit from Norway, Japan, Palestine and Sweden and taken part in conferences in Sweden and Lithuania.

The Young Mayor program has visited Strasbourg on several occasions, for the Euroscola program and with young people to speak at conferences including the World Democracy Forum.
